The United Nations (UN) has officially confirmed that chemical weapons stocks and ammunition in Syria have been completely and irreversibly destroyed. Speaking at the session titled "Situation in the Middle East" held at the UN Security Council, UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu shared critical developments regarding the chemical weapons decomposition process with the international public.

Referring to the critical visit of the UN and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) inspection teams to Syria last month, Nakamitsu announced that the intensive inspection and verification activities carried out in the field were successfully completed. Nakamitsu stated that as a result of the investigations, the OPCW confirmed that the latest inventory statements submitted by Syria coincide with the facts on the ground and that the chemical substances have been completely neutralized. It was emphasized that this development was a historical turning point in that the OPCW confirmed that chemical munitions of Syrian origin had been destroyed for the first time since 2014. In addition, the Syrian administration's regular cooperation with the OPCW was also welcomed.

Syria's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ibrahim Olabi, spoke at the session and stated that they will continue to work with international partners with determination to ensure accountability and national justice regarding the allegations regarding the use of chemical weapons in his country. Olabi argued that Syria displayed a transparent attitude in this process and fulfilled its responsibilities within the framework of international law.

Referring to regional security crises in his speech, Permanent Representative Olabi claimed that Israel's military attacks on Syrian territory sabotaged chemical search and destruction efforts. Ibrahim Olabi said, "Israel's repeated attacks have seriously hindered chemical search and destruction operations, even bringing these activities to a complete halt at some critical stages." Calling on members of the UN Security Council to take responsibility for Israel's aggressive attitude, Olabi added that these attacks undermine the stability of not only Syria but the entire Middle East, and that regional peace cannot be maintained if security is endangered.
