The European Statistical Office (Eurostat) shared the current population data of the European Union (EU) member countries with the public as of January 1, 2026. According to official data, the total population of the EU increased by 706 thousand people compared to the previous year and reached 452 million people. With this development, the EU population completed its fifth consecutive year with a growth trend, after the sharp decline experienced in 2021 due to the impact of the global Covid-19 epidemic. From a historical perspective, it can be seen that the EU population has increased by 8 million people in the last 10 years and by 16 million people in total in the last 20 years.

While Germany maintained its title as the most populous country of the union with a population of 83.5 million, it was followed by France with a population of 69.1 million. The rest of the list includes Italy with a population of 58.9 million, Spain with a population of 49.6 million and Poland with a population of 36.3 million.
