The historical temple, which served as a mosque with the foundation deed of Fatih Sultan Mehmet Khan in 1453 after the conquest, but was converted into a museum by the decision of the Council of Ministers dated November 24, 1934, opened its doors to believers again after an 86-year break. Following the cancellation of its museum status by the historic decision of the 10th Chamber of the Council of State on July 10, 2020, Hagia Sophia, which was transferred to the Presidency of Religious Affairs with the decree signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, was restored to its original state with the first Friday prayer performed on July 24, 2020.

In the temple, where the sermons are recited every day and the tradition of responding between sala and adhan is kept alive on Fridays, Quran, recitation and music training is also given by the staff. Stating that the notification and promotional activities carried out by the expert guides within the Presidency of Religious Affairs, especially for foreign visitors, bear fruit, Cevlek stated that they witness foreign visitors every week who choose Islam (convert) by being impressed by the fascinating atmosphere of the mosque.
