Greece is preparing to take a giant step in the defense industry in order to change the military balances in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean. In the shadow of the chronic tensions with Türkiye, the Athens administration pushed the button for a new multi-layered defense system that aims to make the airspace impenetrable. The Greek National Security Government Council (KYSEA) will give final approval to the giant defense package agreement with Israel, worth approximately 3.5 billion euros, on Thursday.

A senior official familiar with the details of the agreement stated that KYSEA gave the first approval earlier this year and is expected to approve the supply contracts at the critical meeting to be held this week.

The Athens government is carrying out an extremely comprehensive project called Achilles Shield in order to modernize the country's air defense infrastructure. This multi-layered system, which will combine anti-ballistic, anti-aircraft and anti-drone (anti-UAV) technologies under a single roof, will protect the country's strategic points.

The official, who gave information to the British news agency Reuters about Greece's defense procurement processes, drew attention to other items on the council's agenda:

A second military official also confirmed this information about the defense system and unmanned aerial vehicle procurement from Israel.
