In addition to the dams, 492.7 million cubic meters of water were transferred from the Melen and Yeşilçay systems this year to support the city's water needs.

Istanbul Aydin University Lecturer and Meteorological Engineer Dr. Güven Özdemir made important evaluations about the water situation of the city. Stating that air temperatures will remain high until 24-25 August, Dr. Güven Özdemir warned, "Heat wave and strong winds trigger evaporation. This will further accelerate water loss in dams. If dam occupancy rates drop to 20 percent, it means that the 'average critical period' has begun for us. Therefore, water conservation needs to be started urgently."

Ozdemir said that the maintenance of automatic sprinklers, especially those used on roadsides and in parks, is inadequate and said, "Many of the sprinklers are faulty; half of the water goes to the grass, the other half flows to the streets. This is a huge waste. Municipalities must quickly fix these malfunctions and provide irrigation from alternative sources instead of mains water.
