The Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Ünal Üstel, reacted very harshly to the cancellation of the football training camp for young people that the world-famous Spanish football club Barcelona planned to hold in the TRNC, as a result of the pressures of the Greek Administration of Southern Cyprus (GCA) and far-right elements. In his written statement following this development, Prime Minister Üstel summarized this blow to the unifying power of sports with the words: "Considering the cancellation of the Barcelona camp a success is a clear admission of isolation."

The football training camp, which the Spanish giant Barcelona announced to be organized for children and young people living in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on September 11, was subjected to intense diplomatic pressure from the Greek side. As a result of the organized smear and obstruction campaign carried out by the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus (GCASC), the Greek Football Federation and the far-right Greek Cypriot National People's Front (ELAM), this meaningful sports event that would bring children together with a world-class club had to be cancelled.

Issuing a detailed statement on the subject, TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel underlined that the football camp in question definitely does not have a political purpose. Emphasizing that the camp is not an attempt at recognition or a tool for political propaganda, Üstel stated that the event is just a pure sports activity that aims to improve themselves by coming together with a world-renowned football academy for Turkish Cypriot children and young people. Drawing attention to the existence and legitimate rights of the Turkish Cypriot people on the island, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel said, "The Turkish Cypriot people are the primary and equal owners of this island. It is our most natural right to live freely, develop, do sports, study, produce and meet the world on these lands. No political pressure, no diplomatic initiative and no isolation policy will be able to deter us from these rights." Stating that the Greek Cypriot side has made it a chronic habit to complain to international organizations about all kinds of social, cultural and sports activities carried out in the TRNC, Üstel added that the TRNC will continue to meet the world with determination with the support of the motherland Türkiye.
