Baykar General Manager Haluk Bayraktar stated that NATO member countries can improve their competencies in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technologies much more quickly and effectively through strategic partnerships.

Bayraktar made important evaluations in the panel titled "From Innovation to Mass Production: Building NATO's UAV Superiority" at the Defense Industry Forum held within the scope of the 36th NATO Heads of State and Government Summit.

Reminding that Türkiye is the largest exporter in the field of UAVs on a global scale, Haluk Bayraktar noted that they have made huge investments in a wide range of areas, from unmanned warplanes to strategic platforms in the last quarter century. Referring to the partnership they established with the Italian defense giant Leonardo, Bayraktar stated that they brought a new breath to the sector with the joint venture Leonardo Baykar Aerospace Systems (LBA Systems).

Bayraktar emphasized that trying to produce every technology from scratch is a waste of time and said, "We have proven platforms, while Leonardo has extremely powerful radars, payloads and electronic systems. Creating a common synergy by bringing the best together is the shortest way to use resources efficiently." Bayraktar stated that as of today, Baykar is working with 40 different countries, including NATO members, and that they aim to further strengthen these ties.

Revealing the success story of the Turkish defense industry in the last twenty years with concrete data, Bayraktar summarized the development speed of the sector with the following words: "20 years ago, there were only 17 companies operating in the field of defense in Türkiye. Today, this number has increased to over 3 thousand. Today, we carry out defense exports of 250 million dollars, which we did in a year in the past, that is, in 2002, in just one week. While our weekly export volume has reached the level of 250 million dollars, our total annual exports are It has exceeded the 10 billion dollar threshold."

Bayraktar stated that it would be a much more rational approach for countries of different sizes within NATO to share existing capabilities rather than trying to build the same capacities from scratch. Bayraktar said that in order to meet the high demand in the field, large-scale companies should produce capacity without waiting for demand to occur, and added that this billion-dollar market offers a vital opportunity for new enterprises and start-ups to create their own capacity.

Haluk Bayraktar said that UAV classes should be handled with different strategies according to the changing dynamics of the battlefield, and stated that especially FPV (First Person View) UAVs are now a kind of ammunition. Underlining that every country should have its own FPV production capacity, Bayraktar said, "Just as every country needs a facility to produce its own bullets, the situation is the same for FPVs. However, when it comes to unmanned combat aircraft or strategic class UAVs, establishing strong alliances will provide much greater benefit rather than building these huge capabilities alone."

Bayraktar stated that the partnership model does not only mean the transfer of existing intellectual property, on the contrary, it aims to build new technologies on existing knowledge, and added that in this way, technology development processes that may take decades can be completed in a very short time with common synergy, giving the alliance a rapid advantage.
