TEKNOFEST, the biggest showcase of Türkiye's national technology move, this time sheds light on the future under the sea with the "Blue Homeland" concept. The Underwater Rocket Competition, organized for the first time within the scope of the festival, witnesses the innovative projects of young engineer candidates coming together from different universities and disciplines. In this prestigious organization held in Gölcük, students aim to contribute to Turkey's domestic and national power in the defense industry with the autonomous underwater vehicles they developed.

Elif Özkul, a second-year student at Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, shared important details about the project they exhibited in the competition. Stating that they are working with a multidisciplinary team of 10 people from different fields such as software, computer, mechanical and biomedical engineering, Özkul conveyed the excitement of the preparation process. Özkul stated that they immediately came together as soon as they heard that the Underwater Rocket Competition would be held last year, and noted that they continued their work by further strengthening their staff this year.

Özkul stated that the autonomous underwater vehicle, which they started production in February, was designed to perform two critical tasks, and explained that the vehicle functions both as an underwater torpedo and can move autonomously on a determined route. Emphasizing that they were able to detect instant location and speed thanks to the sensors on the vehicle, the young engineer stated that the system successfully completed the target route by staying in the safe zone and performed its main task, which was to open the nose and launch the ammunition. Stating that TEKNOFEST is a unique school for them, Özkul stated that the feedback they received from the referees in the field and the intense R&D process turned their engineering training into a practical experience.

Elif Özkul stated that holding the competition in Gölcük, her hometown, has a great meaning for her, and touched upon the positive impact of being in the navy and shipyard atmosphere on the team. Stating that seeing the military ships and defense industry elements in the region closely increased their motivation, Özkul said that they aim to use the prototype they developed in larger underwater projects in the future. He added that they are focusing on the localization of some critical sensors that are not yet produced in Turkey and that they are continuing their projects in this direction as a TÜBİTAK project.

Gaziantep University Aviation Management Department 4th year student Zeynep Erikçi stated that the team they initially established with 4 people has now reached a total of 11 students from the Aerospace, Aviation Management, Mechanical and Electrical-Electronics Engineering departments. Reminding that they applied to the Underwater Rocket Competition in February 2025 and succeeded in becoming a finalist last year, Erikçi emphasized that they are on the field with a much stronger and more experienced team this year.

Bringing together the underwater world and rocket technology was an eye-opening experience for them, Erikçi said, adding that their biggest goal is to bring an innovative idea to Türkiye's defense industry. Stating that he is very proud to take part in the production of national technologies as a police child and soldier brother, Erikçi pointed out the importance of Türkiye, as a country surrounded by seas on three sides, reaching a very strong position in underwater technologies in both military and civilian fields.
