The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has implemented new regulations that determine the procedures and principles regarding new foods to be put on the market. "Turkish Food Codex New Foods Regulation" and "Implementation Communiqué" came into force after being published in the Official Gazette.

This regulation prepared by the Ministry was created in line with the increasing demand for the use of developing technologies and alternative food sources. The new regulations were designed to enable food business operators to safely introduce the products they developed to the market.

EU List and Application in Türkiye

The regulation listed 189 new food ingredients that are on the European Union (EU) list and deemed suitable for use in Türkiye. However, 32 food types were not included in the legislation for reasons such as the use of GMO microorganisms or pork-derived ingredients.

Food Safety and Risk Assessment

The use of new foods will be allowed after a risk assessment is made according to established procedures. Foods that are determined to not pose any safety risk to human health can be placed on the market under certain conditions.

Application and Innovation Incentive

For new foods that are not included in the regulation, food business operators will be able to apply to the Ministry and request evaluation. Within the scope of the Communiqué, regulations were made regarding the determination of new food status and application contents.

Protection of Consumer Health

The main purpose of these regulations is to ensure that ingredients that have not been consumed before are made available for use after risk assessment, while protecting consumer health. At the same time, it is aimed to support innovation for innovative foods and production processes.
